heh-heh: i'm sure The Civilians would be flattered to hear they're being compared to Borges! i think you're conflating a comment thread about Borges that was sparked by the last piece.
but anyways: thanks. glad you appreciate the formalist tomfoolery.
Again, fantastic use of space, Josh. You're truly exploiting the comix form to its fullest potential [in the last bunch of strips you've drawn, too]. Bravo, Josh.
And, yes, everytime I stroll over to Jim Hanley's Universe or walk near the Empire State Building, a chill runs up my spine and I take a long, deep look at the monolith wondering if it's the last time it will be standing proud.
that's how i feel too when i'm the nabe. chills, and always making sure i'm across the street, looking out for traffic, looking up at the sky, nervous as all get out. really nice, 4eyez...
also: go cats, go! act-i-vate is the shit. congrats all around.
I love they way the Empire State Building stands tall throughout the piece, spacially ignoring your neuroses on the page.
I was living in the JFK flight path in late 2001; my whole block was squinting and wincing when planes passed: "that one's coming in TOO LOW... isn't it?" Weird times; great piece.
Just had a thought. What if they were the same eye in separate pannels, but put together as though they were right and left eye. This might make it Picassoesque.
interesting idear. it crossed my mind to do it, but i didn't want to channel picasso in just 2 panels, while remaining un-cubist in the rest of it. too jarring.
if you remember the night of 9/11, they reported on the news that there had been a bomb threat at the ESB, and the building was evacuated. it was a hoax, of course. but it definitely seemed feasible back then.
and i'll never get rid of my initial impression that the WTC towers were bombed, not that they collapsed on their own. i mean, i know in my rational mind, that they came down due to internal pressures caused by the airplanes' impacts and the heat of the fires, but still...
all the same, i refuse to endorse all the nutcases out there who postulate that the towers WERE bombed, and the gov't is covering it up. that's going down the rabbit hole a little too far for me.
As for the idea that they were bombed as well, I think it's feasible that bombs may have been planted to go off after the planes hit to speed along the process, but as to whether or not the government put them there, or the terrorists, I wouldn't know.
