IMMORTAL - The End

Previously: http://www.deanhaspiel.com/immortal.html

The End?

Not by a long shot, party people.

IMMORTAL is Part One of a proposed BILLY DOGMA TRILOGY. I aim to launch the sequel in late-January. There will be a sneak peek teaser with the new title before the start date ~ coming soon.

Before I split for the holiday season, I'd like to thank some folks for helping me make IMMORTAL happen. Besides my obvious comix inspirations: Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, C.C. Beck, Alex Toth, and Frank Miller, I have some shout outs. I'd like to thank my beautiful girlfriend, SBX [for whom I dedicated IMMORTAL], and who challenged me and supported my story even when she didn't dig the zombie parts. I'd like to thank Dan Goldman aka [info]dangoldman for his infectious energy and for helping me smooth out the rough parts when my plot started to swerve. I'd like to thank Josh Neufeld aka [info]4_eyez for not letting our 25+ year relationship nor the fact that he was "there" at BILLY DOGMA's inception in 1995, diminish new understanding for my characters metamorphosis and championing me with his academic insights. I'd like to thank the inimitable Benjamin Stone aka [info]benchilada for rooting every comic ever posted at [info]act_i_vate. We took backdoor bets if and when Ben would post and he did every single time. And, speaking of which, I'd like to thank all the cartoonists at [info]act_i_vate and all the comix journalists [Heidi MacDonald, Chris Arrant, Tom Spurgeon, Matt Brady, JK Parkin, Jen Contino, The Indie Spinner Rack, The Cocktail Hour, Cindy Center], and Jeff Newelt aka Jah Furry [our minister of hype], for pimping our wares and spreading the gospel. I want to thank the mighty Warren Ellis for giving our collective the official nod and for bringing the masses to our broadband window. I want to thank Kat Roberts aka [info]sateenduralux for her stealthy yet steady cheer. Last, but not least, I wanna bow down to my homeboy, the incredibly talented, Michel Fiffe aka [info]zegas, and thank him profusely for babysitting me on more than half those late Tuesday nights when I sat down to create IMMORTAL while he banged out PANORAMA. I couldn't have done it without him. And, finally, I want to thank YOU, the readers for taking your time to stick with my super-psychedelic romance-noir and for weighing in with your thoughts every time I posted a new episode. It meant more to me than I could ever convey. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I'm happy to know our web-comix clubs altered your previously cynical views. Comix are cool and sexy.

You know, IMMORTAL is my favourite webcomic ever. And you know my english doesn't allow me to express how deeply I appreciated it. Thank you, [info]man_size

Haspiel-Dono,

As is only fitting, the end of part one of Immortal is narrated by The People,

And I do my best in life not to lie, so every comment I make about your comics, and those of everybody else in A-I-V and D-A-I-V?

Nothing but my own truth.

Off you go, now. You've got other ass to kick.

The story started out with "the people" narrating Billy & Jane's tale, so I figured the framing sequence was appropriate. Thx, as always, for cheering us on, Brother Ben.

It's been beautiful. I'm glad Billy will be back.
And that in the meantime we can all drink to their success!

You should've called this comic "IMMORAL", cuz it's a crime to make us wait for the next story...

This was such a nice thread until Nick B tried to make a joke. Ugg!
As I said before, something evolved and exploded with your story and art as
you worked on this.

I will miss it until it returns.

Did I just see Jane'e eyes. So poignant. So vulnerable. In spite of those fiery words of woo she's a babycake inside. Hm. We all have our sweet sides.

Challenges aside, I am so proud of you for making Immortal so dynamic and beautiful.

I'd like to add my thanks to Chris Staros who a year and a half ago challenged you to make something of your very own. And here it is, all these months later. Tangible and real. Made from your brain, sweat, tears, and joy.

Its great.

You're the first to comment on Jane's big reveal. How apropos. It took me more than a decade to make that happen.

Thx for cheering me all those Tuesday nights away from you. And, yes, Staros was a sure kick in the cajones. I owe him a fancy drink with an umbrella.

Anyway -- this one's for you, babycakes.

*APPLAUSE*

You're the first long-form story to graduate... that must feel great. Now you gotta wrap this worm round hook and dangle it to book publishers, honey. Let the world know what everyone on ACT-I-VATE already does.

Thx, G. The initial excitement for all of this was heavily shepherded by you and I can't thank you enough. Now, let's see how our digital babies do in print and on some iPods. Dig?

FANTASTIC!!

I loved every panel of it.

I can't wait for the next one!!

Any comic that ends with cops and little old ladies drinking in a bar is aces in my book.

(sniffle)

It's NOT the end! Thank God. I would try holding my breath until the end of January, but that would be unhealthy. Can't wait for BILLY DOGMA PART II!!

You are the best. Truly an inspiration. (For all your praise of Ben for his stalwart posting - you've been the same for my stuff at The Chemistry Set, and for that I'm eternally grateful.)

(I tried to post this last night around 2 am, but LJ seems to have been incapable of retaining my comments at the time. Apologies if this is redundant to comments since.)

J-- J-- J---

JANE HAS EYES!!!!

With novelty contact lenses, no less.

Is that your old neighbor as depicted in KEYHOLE drinking at the bar on the far left? Hell, I'm halfway surprised the narrating policeman isn't the Undercolor Cop. A true reunion of the Haspiverse!

Thank you for this, Dean. I mean, all this. Any project is only worth at least the sum of its parts, but I doubt the Act-I-Vate experiment would have survived without you consistently bringing the quality and your good name. Everyone else here stands on their own merits, true, but they'd probably be standing apart otherwise. Don't stay away too long.

Ken A.

[info]man_size

December 23 2006, 01:33:50 UTC 5 years ago

Indeed. JANE HAS EYES. And those ain't contact lenses my friend. It's why she hides 'em. Heart-shaped pupils only for her sweetheart to see [and know].

Nope, that's not ye olde neighbor from KEYHOLE but close. It's ye olde neighbor's neighbor. GOTCHA!

The Undercolor Cop may make a return in the 3rd part of this TRILOGY.

And, thx for weighing in consistantly and signing your Anon posts [even though it takes maybe 3-mins. to spark a proper, free LJ]. I'm glad ACT-I-VATE has served you well.

aww immorta!!.

this comic has been such a consistent part of my past year its weird to see it reach the end. your stunning artwork and way with a tale kept my attention for billy and jane from ever hitting a lull. can't wait to see what new ways you find to torment them.
thnx dino!
ps... please tell me the bar flies with the amazing faces make it into the 2nd + 3rd parts

Re: aww immorta!!.

Bestill my heart. Look who popped her shy head into the public zoo!?! Thx for the kudos, sweetie.

Bar Fly's are not planned for the sequel but, dollars to donuts, neo-secondary characters will win you over.

I've especially loved the dialogue throughout the entire comic. Very memorable quotes have been spoken...written...whichever. Cool to know they'll be back though. Good stuff all the way through, with a very fitting ending. Congrats on it's completion.

So Endeth...

and so it begins.

Looking forward to the next unbelievable chapter, what can come after Immortal? Hollywood, inevitably.

Yes, a million dollar meal and billion dollar movie indeed, shall that search truly begin?

[info]man_size

December 23 2006, 01:51:06 UTC 5 years ago

Re: So Endeth...

I've lined up a doozy of a journey for Billy to undergo next. In search of self. One cannot fully share with another until they own themself.
