Thomas lets his handsome, tuxedoed, adult birds, and fuzzy, adorable juveniles, speak to us, sometimes with humor, sometimes with sadness, about the seriousness of global warming. Because if we don’t see it yet, they do. “And they know what to say about it, if only we will swim with them a little way, and try to understand. So flop onto your belly, slide over the ice, and dive into this collection of strips from Thomas’s ongoing webcomic, “Pole-The Comic Strip with Penguins”. It will melt your heart.” (From Jennifer Hayden’s Introduction)

-

Thomas Baehr created the strip POLE in 2005. In the same year the New York Press published it for the first time. Since then, the penguins appeared in newspapers, magazines, books, and the internet in the USA and in Europe. “Make Guano Not War” is the first collection.

ACT-I-VATE’s SAM & LILAH MOVES TO MTV GEEK, GIVES AWAY FREE STUFF

Gentle readers, friends, family, and acquaintances:

We are pleased to announce that, as part of the continuing relationship between webcomics collective ACT-I-VATE (http:www.activatecomix.com) and MTV GEEK, Jim Dougan and Hyeondo Park’s SAM & LILAH will be part of growing new comics lineup at the MTV site.

The first three chapters of S&L that have previously appeared on ACT-I-VATE will now also appear on MTV GEEK, with future installments to follow, likewise, on both sites.

You can read more about it, and even see video of Jim being interviewed at this year’s MoCCA Festival, here:

http://geek-news.mtv.com/2011/05/19/star-crossed-lovers-read-act-i-vates-sam-and-lilah-now-on-mtv-geek/

And read (or re-read, as the case may be) the first installment of SAM & LILAH here:

http://www.mtv.com/geek/comic/issue/1111/sam-and-lilah-1-pt-1.jhtml

SO WHAT ABOUT THAT FREE STUFF?

Here’s the deal: each week we will be asking a question, or asking you to tell us a story relevant to that week’s Sam & Lilah update. The best response will get the writer our Weekly Prize: a signed print of a page from that week! Then, for each Chapter, we’ll pick a winner to receive the Chapter Prize: a signed copy of the ACT-I-VATE PRIMER from IDW Publishing, which contains an exclusive Sam & Lilah story that will not appear on MTV Geek (or on ACT-I-VATE). Finally, we’ll choose from among all the responses over 11 weeks to receive the Grand Prize of a page (our choice) of Hyeondo Park’s original art!

How do I reply: you can post on Tumblr, on LiveJournal, on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/samandlilah), Tweet us @samandlilah, link to a blog post, or e-mail us at samnlilah AT gmail DOT com. To be eligible for the Chapter Prize, you only need to have provided a response that we like to any of the questions during the time the Chapter first appeared (winners of the Weekly Prizes will be automatically included). Finally, to be eligible for the Grand Prize, you only need to have provided a response that we like to any of the questions during the time that all three Chapters appeared (winners of the Weekly and Chapter Prizes will be automatically included, though, so if you’re a latecomer it better be good!.)
So in summary: 11 free prints, 3 signed books, 1 page of original art, and an unlimited amount of Jim and Hyeondo’s good will and appreciation.
5th Anniversary of ACT-I-VATE.com + launch of EVERYWHERE

Allstar Webcomix Collective ACT-I-VATE.com celebrates its 5th Anniversary on 2/1/11 by launching EVERYWHERE, a Tongue-in-Cheek Horror Comics Anthology, Written by Chris Miskiewicz, illustrated by a dozen artists including Rodney Ramos, Dennis Calero, Rick Parker and more

"Five years ago, eight independent cartoonists allied and presented personal signature works, online for free, and ACT-I-VATE was born," says Dean Haspiel, creator of Billy Dogma, and co-founder of ACT-I-VATE. “Five years later, ACT-I-VATE expanded its roster, created a PRIMER graphic novel, and helped confirm publishing options between print and web. A bold example of how a curated destination point for new stories and ideas can sustain, ACT-I-VATE continues to break ground as the industry transitions to the Digital Age.”

The premise for the newest series to launch on ACT-I-VATE, EVERYWHERE created by Chris Miskiewicz, is simple: You wake up to find that millions of animals have appeared EVERYWHERE around the world at the same moment. What happened and what does it mean when the natural world has gone horribly wrong?

“The EVERYWHERE idea was born out of a drunken brainstorm between artist Andrew Wendel and I,” says Chris Miskiewicz. “We were discussing my obsession with the seemingly-sudden rampant natural disasters and how Twilight Zoney it’s all been, and we said, ‘disasters, one-shot Twilight Zone-like comix… zoiks! Next day I emailed Dean Haspiel two scripts and he goes “This is an ACT-I-VATE comic!”

“ACT-I-VATE is proud to host the webcomix debut of author, Chris Miskiewicz,” says Haspiel “and his EC Comics inspired EVERYWHERE anthology, which will appeal to anyone...anywhere.”

In the first season of The EVERYWHERE Anthology, Chris is joined by a number of top comix artists as well as some fresh talent. “Working with the various artists on EVERYWHERE has been fantastic,” says Miskiewicz. “Each episode features a different artist’s interpretation of an animal apocalypse. They’re each so different from each other giving the series a great overall look and feel.”

The EVERYWHERE Anthology launches Tuesday 2/1/11 on the 5th Anniversary of ACT-I-VATE with “Horses EVERYWHERE” by Chris Miskiewicz and artist Andrew Wendel. Episodes will run the first of every month featuring the talents of Rick Parker (Marvel, MTV’s Beavis & Butthead), Dennis Calero (X-Men), Nathan Schreiber (Power Out), Bobby Timony (Night Owls), Maurice Fontenot (Ghost Pimp), Thomas Baehr (The End is Here), Seth Kushner (Culture Pop/Graphic NYC), Rodney Ramos (Transmetropolitan/Green Lantern), Kate McElroy (Fables 100), Chris Sinderson (Next Door Neighbor/Twisted/Savage Dragon Funnies), Ashley Quigg, and more TBA.

Click here to read EVERYWHERE: http://www.act-i-vate.com/120-1-1.comic

Brooklyn native Chris Miskiewicz is a multi-media performer working in television, film, music and comics. He is a founding member of the Brooklyn based psychedelic rock group Swinger Eight, and the writer/producer of the upcoming live action web series Secret Identity.

ACT-I-VATE.com is a curated comix community of select artists that produce their original, signature works sans editorial oversight, and offer their personal comix for free on a daily basis.

Press Inquiries / Interview Requests: Jeff Newelt / jahfurry@gmail.com
